The Department of Housing and Urban Development has now decided it will demolish four out of 10 of the largest public-housing projects in New Orleans.
HUD concluded that the environmental conditions of the buildings in the aftermath of Katrina were too bad to fix.
The decision means about 3,000 residents who lived there will now have to find someplace else to go. HUD said it will continue to give those residents housing vouchers to use elsewhere while they rebuild in New Orleans, but many of the 1000 residents who have been living in tents in the city say they want to go back to their old homes.
