What's life like as a reporter at NPR? Frequent humiliation. We have to put up with questions from the likes of Kitty Eisele, producer of "All Things Fundraising." Kitty has been stalking the cubicles here asking people how much they weigh. It's for a project that ace science correspondent Robert Krulwich is working on for the fund drive. He wants to know how much your dollars are supporting -- literally. So, when the funding drive on your local station comes up, do not switch stations. It's your chance to learn how much NPR reporters weigh. But not me. I identified myself as Kitty Eisele. And I'm sure Kitty won't put that on the air.

But the real Kitty Eisele did alert me to this mention of NPR on Wonkette. The folks there apparently enjoyed Ari Shapiro's story on Morning Edition today.

Ari reported that Republican Sen. Arlen Specter is very concerned about President Bush's habit of adding "signing statements" to legislation and wants Congress to sue the President. Ari said that Congress vs. the president would be like Godzilla vs. King Kong. Wonkette wonders if that would make the Supreme Court Mothra or Raymond Burr.

Wonkette was alerted to the NPR story by "Wonkette Mom," who listens to NPR at work and thinks NPR's Peter Overby sounds like the Peanuts character Linus. Peter is taking it all in good humor. Peter's editor, the aforementioned Ron Elving, points out that there's a school of thought that holds that each of the original Peanuts characters, as designed back in the 1950s, represents a way of approaching the most profound questions of life. So Lucy represents force and certitude. Charlie Brown is depression. And Linus is the voice of reason and rationality, just like our Peter.

"Wonkette Mom" might want to think about Ari Shapiro as Schroeder. He plays a mean piano.

King Godzilla: Signing Statement

If the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that President Bush overstepped his authority in ordering military war crimes trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees, all Bush need do is issue a non-signed "signing statement" declaring the decision to be a limitation upon his executive powers in wartime and therefore unconstitutional.

King Gozilla: Different Cartoon

This can be a fun game.

Ira Flato = Linus

Lianne Hanson = Peppermint Patty

Lakshmi Singh = ... we may have to call in a different cartoon
