'Incurable' Elvis Fan Koizumi Makes Graceland Stop
SCOTT SIMON, host:
Of course there were black-tie dinners and critical meetings, but this week's visit of Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi to the United States will probably be remembered as the Elvis Summit.
The President took the Prime Minister to Graceland. Their tour guides were Lisa Marie and Priscilla Presley. Japan's supreme elected leader is a famous and incurable Elvis fan. Air Force One served fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches on the flight down to Memphis, which the President and Prime Minister did not ingest. Look what that diet did for Elvis!
And the President gave the prime minister a jukebox pre-stocked with Elvis tunes. The Japanese prime minister reciprocated by singing Love Me Tender, Love Me Sweet. Somehow, we don't see Vladimir Putin doing that.
Coming up, Franklin Roosevelt took Winston Churchill on cruises, but what about Hoboken to see the birthplace of Frank Sinatra? Coming up, FDR's first 100 days in office. He did it his way. Stay tuned.
