Musician Syd Barrett Dies at Age 60

July 11, 2006 - Syd Barrett, once the primary songwriter for Pink Floyd — and the man said to have invented the band's name — has died.
According to the group's spokesperson, Barrett died several days ago of undisclosed causes. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for a number of years. At 60 years old, the musician had become a recluse in his hometown of Cambridge, England.
Despite his brief career — he was with Pink Floyd for less than three years and released two solo albums — Syd Barrett was a primary catalyst for British psychedelic rock.
