A relative newcomer to the Philadelphia music scene, the rootsy bluegrass band Boris Garcia mixes mandolin with electric guitar to make a danceable folk/jam hybrid that ranges from freeform improvisation to traditional Americana. The group performed live from WXPN and World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on Sept. 1.

Formed in 2005, when several veterans of the Philadelphia jam-band scene decided to record an album (Family Reunion) and perform shows for the fun of collaboration, Boris Garcia quickly established a reputation for energetic live performances. The group's most recent release, Mother's Finest, was influenced by storytelling songwriters such as Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, Doc Watson, The Band and The Grateful Dead.
