President Bush used an address to U.S. military veterans in Salt Lake City on Thursday to kick off a new series of speeches defending the occupation of Iraq. The president says the military effort in Iraq is now the front line in the administration's overall "war on terror."

Slate chief political correspondent John Dickerson talks with Madeleine Brand about the substance of the president's remarks and what he hopes to accomplish with these speeches.
