September 20, 2006By combining intelligent lyrics and haunting melodies, Midlake continues to develop its vision of beautiful neo-Americana music. The band's new sophomore album, The Trials of Van Occupanther, finds Midlake perfecting its acoustic, increasingly piano-driven '70s folk-rock sound.

Based in Denton, Texas, Midlake's members have spent years crafting their sound, which has been compared to Grandaddy, The Flaming Lips and The Beatles. With the help of label owner and former Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, Midlake released its terrific debut, Bamnan and Silvercork, in 2004. A series of tours then helped earn the band a large fan base and praise from critics worldwide, a trend that's only continued this summer.
