A Top Chinese Official Is Fired in Corruption Probe
The Communist party boss in Shanghai has been fired for corruption, the highest-level Chinese official to be caught in an anti-graft drive in more than 10 years. Chen Liangyu, the party secretary in Shanghai, was implicated in an investigation of the misuse of Shanghai's social security fund.
Chen Liangyu is a member of China's all-powerful Politburo, a committee of 24 people who run the country.
In the inquiry of Shanghai's city finances, earlier reports have said that one-third of the $1.2 billion pension fund was illegally invested in risky real estate and infrastructure projects. Chen is accused of aiding illegal businesses, protecting corrupt officials and abusing his position to help his own family members.
His dismissal is being called a bold move by President Hu Jintao, for both practical and political ends.
