Officials in China announced they were laying off teachers at primary and middle schools. But they made an exception: Single parents could keep their jobs. The Shanghai Daily reports that Chinese officials have now suspended the plan, and managed to persuade all but two of the once-married teachers to get back together.

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

Okay, so officials in China announced they were laying off teachers at primary and middle schools. But they made an exception: Single parents could keep their jobs. And so dozens of teachers at one school quickly filed for divorce. The Shanghai Daily reports that Chinese officials have now suspended the plan, and they've managed to convince all but two of the once-married teachers to get back together. This is MORNING EDITION.
