As principal of Facing History, a high school in New York City, Gillian Smith says she doesn't want her students to make the same mistakes she did.

Smith herself was a truant as a kid; she had to finish high school at an alternative school.

Now, as principal, she's looking for innovative and collaborative ways to get her students in classes.
