At least three firefighters have been killed as they battled a blaze near Palm Springs, Calif., about 90 miles east of Los Angeles. Authorities say the firefighters were trapped in their fire engine when winds suddenly pushed flames in their direction.

The fire started Wednesday night in the community of Cabazon; it has already burned more than 4,000 acres. Three homes have also been destroyed.
