Samuel Barber borrowed a literary theme when he wrote his Three Essays for Orchestra, a short work with a single idea. It wasn't new to him: Barber had tried the idea before with his Essay for Piano. Now, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra performs one of these works: Barber's Second Essay for Orchestra.
