After more than 30 years of making music, the band America could easily be flailing away on the county-fair circuit. But the group has reinvented itself in recent years, drawing inspiration from younger generations while still holding on to the gentle pop sound that helped make it famous.
Since its 1972 breakthrough with "Horse with No Name," America has released an impressive assortment of best-selling albums — including a greatest-hits set called History, which has sold more than four million copies. The group's latest, Here & Now, is a two-disc set: Half of it features recently recorded live versions of America's greatest hits, while the other half contains new studio music recorded with the likes of Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller and musicians from My Morning Jacket and Nada Surf. Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne and James Iha of The Smashing Pumpkins produced Here & Now, as well as make guest appearances.
