You can't get a leopard to change its spots. And apparently you can't get a sloth to be more lively, either. German scientists have given up after a three-year experiment aimed at motivating a sloth to climb up and down a pole. The sloth refused to budge, even when tempted with spaghetti.

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

You can't get a leopard to change its spots. And apparently you can't get a sloth to liven up either. Some German scientists have given up after a three-year experiment. They were trying to get a sloth to climb up and down a pole, part of a study on how animals move. The sloth refused to budge even when tempted with spaghetti. He's residing in a zoo now, back to his slothful ways, by all accounts quite relaxed.

It's MORNING EDITION.
