Okkervil River doesn't hold anything back: Its emotion-drenched performances are intense to the point of seeming overwrought, and its songs unfold like literature. The band's brilliant song "The President's Dead" even uses a fictional assassination as a jumping-off point to ruminate on national tragedies and the way everyday people view themselves in the context of world events. Okkervil River's newest album, an "appendix" to the excellent Black Sheep Boy, again draws on themes of alienation and mystery.

Seattle-based KEXP presents a diverse mix of music, live performances and podcasts from indie rock and punk to jazz and old school soul.
