Talking Politics, Power on Intl. Women's Day
The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honor of the garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against poor working conditions. International Women's Day is now observed on March 8.
Caroline Hannan, director of the Division for the Advancement of Women at the United Nations, discusses the importance of putting women in positions of power in countries where their rights were previously neglected.
