Colleges Boost Counseling in Wake of VA Tech
It has been one year since Virginia Tech student Seung-hui Cho shot and killed 32 students and faculty before turning the gun on himself. Since then, colleges nationwide have sought to bolster their health services in an attempt to identify troubled students before they do harm to themselves and others.
Gregory Eells, director of counseling and psychological services at Cornell University, details Cornell's unique risk assessment services. Eells explains how the program works, and what happens when a professor notices a "red flag" in a student's behavior.
Tristan Davies, who teaches writing at Johns Hopkins University, talks about how to spot warning signs of mental health problems in students' writing — and when it's appropriate to intervene.
