Co-host Steve Inskeep reports on Defense Secretary Robert Gates' plan to recommend Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq, for a new position.

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

The man overseeing American efforts in Iraq is up for a promotion. General David Petraeus will be recommended to go from the commander in Iraq to the head of US Central Command. That means General Petraeus becomes the boss of the next commander in Iraq, as well as overseeing US efforts from Afghanistan to Somalia and beyond. The US Senate would have to approve this promotion.
