For more than a decade, R. Kelly has topped the charts as one of R&B's most successful artists — but he is also known for his repeated scrapes with the law.

In 2002, a sex tape surfaced allegedly containing footage of R. Kelly with a 14-year-old girl. The R&B superstar now faces 14 counts of child pornography. The opening arguments against R. Kelly began in a Chicago courtroom on Wednesday.

Steven Gray, a reporter covering the trial for Time magazine, discusses the controversy surrounding R. Kelly's high-profile trial.
