Citing Sexism, Clinton Supporters Vow a Switch

May 23, 2008

As Hillary Clinton presses on with her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, bitterness is setting in with some of her supporters who feel that sexism is to blame for her struggles to defeat rival Democrat Sen. Barack Obama.

MSNBC's Chris Matthews is especially well-known for playing hardball with the New York senator's image, as in a broadcast with Mika Brzezinski.

"Let's not forget, and I'll be brutal: The reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she's a front-runner is because her husband messed around," Matthews said. "That's how she got to be senator from New York — we keep forgetting it. She didn't win on her merits. Because everybody felt 'my god, this woman stood up under humiliation.'"

Comments like that one have sparked demonstrations outside of NBC offices around the country this week.

Sophie B. Hawkins was one of the protesters outside the NBC studios in Burbank, Calif.

"We're here to say we're not asleep," Hawkins said. "We hear this; we don't like it. And by the way — she's not losing."

Clinton's die-hard supporters haven't given up on her campaign. And they don't want her to, either — not until every vote of every delegate is counted at the Democratic Party convention in August.

Many of Clinton's supporters say they may switch their allegiance to Sen. John McCain if Obama gets the nomination.
