SXSW 2007: Antibalas

Recorded Live on March 16, 2007, Produced by The Current

Antibalas

Antibalas at SXSW.

March 16, 2007What began as a dead-on tribute to Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band has slowly progressed into a creative amalgamation of jazz, funk, dub, hip-hop and, at its root, Afrobeat. Afrobeat is characterized by big bands with large horn sections, polyrhythmic percussion, grooving repetition and group improvisation. On Antibalas' fourth album, Security, the band switches gears a bit and makes a bolder musical and political statement. With special attention paid to pop songwriting, the disc should reach out to a broader audience while keeping longtime fans invigorated.

Based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, The Current features new rock, electronic, hip-hop, and indie music alongside legendary artists.
