June 16, 2008When Kathleen Edwards took the stage at Philadelphia's NON-COMMvention with band member Jim Bryson, she played about half the songs from her new album, Asking for Flowers. In the set's most memorable song, "I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory," she compares herself to her crush, singing, "You're the Great One; I'm Marty McSorley." To the crowd's great amusement, Edwards proudly recalled kissing the legendary Canadian hockey player McSorley while shooting the song's video.

Edwards' fusion of alt-country, folk and pop made her a star in Canada shortly after the release of her 2003 debut album, Failer. In the years to follow, the songwriter and violinist has continued to build on her popularity, scoring two Juno nominations for Back to Me. With smart lyrics that range from the emotional to the political to the hilarious, Asking for Flowers has been widely hailed as her best yet.

Edwards, Alejandro Escovedo and Jakob Dylan performed at the NON-COMMvention in Philadelphia on May 31. Dr. John, Ani DiFranco, The Hold Steady and Newton Faulkner performed at the convention the night before. NON-COMM is an annual convention of non-commercial radio programmers and music directors, as well as other music-industry professionals.
