STEVE INSKEEP, host:

Ahmadinejad's political maneuverings are closely watched in Israel, the country he once said he wanted to wipe off the map. The New York Times reports that more than 100 Israeli fighter planes participated in a major military exercise earlier this month; the source for that report is American officials; Israeli officials aren't saying anything. U.S. officials contend the Israeli exercise appeared to be a rehearsal for a possible bombing attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.
