Raised by musicians in New York's Greenwich Village, Aurora "Rory" Block has spent her career preserving the acoustic Delta blues tradition of predecessors such as Son House and Robert Johnson, all the while stretching the boundaries of the form.

Block began classical-guitar training at the age of 10. The Greenwich Village music scene inspired and nurtured her pursuit of music, leading her to reach out to her many heroes while they were still alive — Skip James, Son House, and Mississippi John Hurt among them. She left home at 15, heading west to California with guitarist Stefan Grossman.

After starting a family, Block eventually returned to her musical roots with the 1981 release of High Heeled Blues, her first of numerous solo albums in the traditional blues form. She has since won five W.C. Handy awards (now the Blues Music Awards), including Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year and Best Acoustic Blues Album. Block has also expanded her repertoire to include old-time country songs and traditional gospel numbers.

This segment originally ran on Jul. 15, 2008.
