John Paul White was born in the musical hotbed of Muscle Shoals, Ala. However, his exposure to the influential artists who recorded there was minimal; he was raised by parents who were fans of Perry Como, The Osmonds, George Jones and Don Williams.

Night after night, White toiled in cover bands playing Southern-rock requests until he scored an audition with an EMI publisher, who got on board with White's original songs. White signed his first publishing deal in 1999.

During his first trip to Los Angeles, Capitol Records signed White on the spot. His debut album, The Long Goodbye, was recorded in Muscle Shoals' legendary FAME studio and was released in August 2008.
