Last week, Sen. John McCain energized the Republican voting base when he chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Voters are now faced with the historic decision to cast a ballot for a woman or an African American.

NPR's Tony Cox sizes up the political landscape with Amy Holmes, a political analyst for CNN, and regular contributor Mary Frances Berry, a professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania.
