MELISSA BLOCK, host:

During last week's Democratic convention, John McCain stayed on the campaign trail, trying not to see the spotlight entirely to Barack Obama. And this week, Senator Obama appears to be returning the favor.

Today, the Democratic nominee made several appearances in Ohio. In the city of New Philadelphia, he held what his campaign called a Discussion on Women and the Economy. And he offered some commentary on the Republican convention.

Senator BARACK OBAMA (Democrat, Illinois; Presidential Candidate): John McCain's campaign manager said that this election is not going to be about the issues, it's going to be about personalities.

(Soundbite of laughter)

Sen. OBAMA: That's a quote.

Unidentified Woman: Good.

Sen. OBAMA: He said it's not going to be about issues, it's going to be about personalities, which probably explains why last night, when they were speaking, all these speakers came up. You did not hear a single word about the economy.

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

Tomorrow, on the same night John McCain accepts his party's presidential nomination, Obama will make a high-profile appearance of his own. He's agreed to his first ever appearance on the Fox News program "The O'Reilly Factor."
