Huntington, W.Va., native Jeff Ellis released his first solo album (The Enemy) just before his Army Reserve unit was called to the Middle East. He returned from Kuwait and Iraq 18 months later with a supply of four-track recordings and journal entries, which he turned into his second solo album, A Front Seat for the End of the World.

"In Harm's Way" tells the story of a roadside bombing, and "All Masters Will Serve" is a last-shall-be-first parable denouncing the wealthy's dominance over the poor. "The Men in Sago Mine" gives a vivid description of a dark night for West Virginia, one in which the national spotlight shone on 13 coal miners trapped in an underground mine. The song appears on Ellis' latest release, Covering the Distance, which comes out in October.
