On Ruthie Foster's latest CD, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, the Austin, Tex.-based singer and guitarist finds a home where deep soul meets classic blues and modern roots music. Foster enjoyed the help of a great studio backing band, as well as producer Malcolm "Papa Mali" Welbourne, himself an established swamp-blues guitarist.

But in this performance, Foster is featured with just her guitar. She pours out her heart on songs written by Rosetta Tharpe ("Up Above My Head"), Lucinda Williams ("Fruits of My Labor") and the Delta blues pioneer Son House ("People Grinnin' in Your Face"). She also includes her own song, "Runaway Soul," from her previous CD of the same name, produced by Lloyd Maines.

The set ends with Mountain Stage vocalist Julie Adams and the house band performing Canadian singer-songwriter Lynn Miles' "Unravel."
