This is the international Year of the Potato.

Agronomist Bill Campbell is honoring potatoes Wednesday by hosting the Palmer Potato Pageant at the railroad depot in Palmer, Alaska.

"I'm hoping lots of people come and bring potatoes that are funny looking and we could give them all cheers," he says.

Friends are expected to bring pot-luck food or snacks to munch on. Palmer says he has a lot of potato paraphernalia.

"There are some potato poems and potato songs, potato jokes and paper for kids to color potato pictures on," he says.

Campbell, who has worked with potatoes for 20-30 years, says the pageant is "a big potato party."
