Jerry Douglas On Mountain Stage

One of the most widely documented musicians of any genre, Dobro master Jerry Douglas has appeared on countless recordings and collaborated with the upper echelon of country and bluegrass musicians. But his taste and talent don't exist only in the realm of those genres, as Douglas has played and recorded with the likes of Ray Charles, Paul Simon and Elvis Costello, and he recently performed alongside Eric Clapton at the 2007 Crossroads concert. In addition to his membership in JD Crowe & The New South and the Country Gentlemen, Douglas has been a longtime member of Alison Krauss & Union Station.

Grammys and other awards aside, Douglas remains unparalleled as a bandleader and arranger, as evidenced by this set at Mountain Stage. Surrounded by a top-notch band (Luke Bulla on fiddle, Todd Parks on bass, Chad Melton on drums and Guthrie Trapp on guitar), Douglas highlights songs from his latest solo album, Glide. Douglas' roots run deep into West Virginia; though he was born in Ohio, his grandparents were from Braxton County, W.Va. In "Who's Your Uncle," Douglas pays a fitting tribute to "Uncle Josh" Graves (1927-2006), the man who inspired him to pick up the Dobro.

Stay tuned this week for a guest appearance by Douglas in the set of Scottish singer Julie Fowlis, who is featured along with Douglas on The Trans-Atlantic Sessions, a BBC Television program that highlights the influence of Scots-Irish music on both sides of the pond.

This segment originally ran Nov. 3, 2008.
