MICHELE NORRIS, host:
Over the last 18 months or so, we've explored the candidates' positions on nearly every major subject but one: pets.
ROBERT SIEGEL, host:
Well, to be honest, we haven't really talked about their favorite movies either. So we're going to mine a little personal territory now.
(Soundbite of movie "The Godfather")
Mr. MARLON BRANDO: (As Don Vito Corleone) Someday, and that day may never come, I'll call upon you to do a service for me.
NORRIS: That is, of course, Marlon Brando as the Godfather. That's Barack Obama's top movie pick. Brando also tops John McCain's list in the Western "Viva Zapata!" along with Billy Wilder's cross-dressing classic "Some Like It Hot."
(Soundbite of movie "Some Like It Hot")
Mr. JACK LEMMON: (As Jerry/Daphne) Oh, you don't understand, Osgood. I'm a man.
Mr. JOE E. BROWN: (As Osgood Fielding III) Well, nobody's perfect.
SIEGEL: The candidates also agree on one of their favorite TV shows.
(Soundbite of theme tune to "The Wire")
SIEGEL: They're both fans of the recently ended HBO series "The Wire."
NORRIS: On John McCain's bookshelf, you will find Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Barack Obama likes that book too. Other favorites of his include Toni Morrison's "Song of Solomon" and Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."
SIEGEL: Which brings us to fishing, a favorite pastime of John McCain. Obama doesn't fish much these days, but he fondly recalls spear fishing back in Hawaii. McCain owns more than a dozen saltwater fish as pets.
NORRIS: Obama has no pets, but did promise his daughters a dog after the election. Coco and Sam are McCain's dogs. His other pets: Oreo the cat, three parakeets, a ferret, and a pair of turtles named Cuff and Link.
SIEGEL: And we close our expose with one last bit of common ground. Both candidates love Frank Sinatra.
(Soundbite of song "My Way")
Mr. FRANK SINATRA: (Singing) And now the end is near, And so I face the final curtain...
