Singer and multi-instrumentalist Julie Fowlis has made a huge name for herself overseas singing in Gaelic, a language understood by only 1 percent of the population in her native Scotland. Her latest CD, Cuilidh (pronounced "cool-lee"), was produced by her husband Eamon Doorley and has received worldwide critical acclaim. In both 2005 and 2007, Fowlis was named Gaelic Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards, in the process becoming the only singer to have won the award twice.

Fowlis also hosts two radio shows for BBC Scotland (Traveling Folk and Global Gathering) and was featured in the Transatlantic Sessions television and radio series, on which she collaborated with American Dobro master Jerry Douglas. Douglas, featured earlier this week on Mountain Stage, joins Fowlis and her band in the last song of this set. Fowlis also plays traditional whistles and is joined by Doorley on bouzouki, Jenna Reid on fiddle and Tony Byrne on guitar.

This segment originally ran Nov. 6, 2008.
