John Leonard, Author And Culture Critic, Dies At 69

Literary critic John Leonard introduced the work of Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez to U.S. readers.

Fresh Air book critic John Leonard was known as one of the best literary critics in America; he was an early champion of future Nobel Prize winners Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Leonard died Wednesday at age 69 from complications with lung cancer.

Leonard became the editor of The New York Times Book Review in 1970 and spent many years as the cultural critic on CBS Sunday Morning. He was a frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, The Village Voice and The Washington Post Book World.
