September 7, 2009 - Patty Loveless, often called "The Queen of Mountain Soul," has built a 20-year career by choosing great songs to complement her charming twang. For her latest release, Sleepless Nights, Loveless dips into the classic country songbook, recording some of the genre's most enduring and endearing songs.

It's no secret that Loveless is a George Jones fan, and she performs a few of his best-known hits ("Why Baby Why," "Color of the Blues") in her fourth appearance on Mountain Stage. Jones and Gene Pitney had a hit with "That's All It Took," but another generation of country fans, including Loveless, heard it first when Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris recorded their version.

Ray Price first had a hit with "Crazy Arms" in 1956; several others, including Patsy Cline and Jerry Lee Lewis, have recorded notable versions of it. It's just the song for Loveless' powerful and heartfelt interpretation, accented by Pete Finney's sweet steel-guitar licks. The oldest song of the lot closes the set: Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart," originally released in 1951.
