November 19, 2008 - In their fourth appearance on Mountain Stage, the modern-day Irish traditionalists in Solas perform songs from their latest release, Love and Laughter. Founding member Seamus Egan plays the banjo, flute and nylon-stringed guitar alongside longtime members Winifred Horan on fiddle, Mick McAuley on accordion, keyboards and background vocals, and Donal Clancy (a member since 2002) on acoustic guitar. The group's newest addition, Mairead Phelan, handles lead-vocal duties.
The set opens with a series of jigs and the traditional Irish love song "Mollai Na Gcuachi Ni Chuilleanain." Eagan wrote "Vital Mental Medicine," inspired by the book The Endurance, Caroline Alexander's chronicle of explorer Ernest Shackleton. The song — a lively, energetic number — reflects the band's name, the Gaelic word for "light."
Solas welcomes Mountain Stage bassist Steve Hill and drummer Ammed Solomon for a tune widely associated with Bob Dylan, "Seven Curses."
This segment was recorded Nov. 19. 2008.
