Rumsfeld Nemesis Nominated To Lead VA
President-elect Barack Obama has chosen retired Army Gen. Eric K. Shinseki as his nominee to be the next veterans affairs secretary.
In an interview for NBC's Meet the Press broadcast Sunday, Obama called Shinseki exactly the right person to make sure U.S. troops are honored when they come home.
Shinseki served as the Army chief of staff during the Bush administration. He gained notoriety just before leaving his position in 2003 after publicly questioning proposed U.S. troop levels for Iraq. At the time, he said the U.S. should be prepared to send hundreds of thousands of troops, going against Bush administration officials who called for a much smaller number.
