Children's advocates want the animated character Shrek fired from his "job" as a government spokesman against obesity. He's also involved in promoting McDonald's. And his next movie has ties with Happy Meals, Snickers, M&Ms, Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, Pop-Tarts and Cheez-its. The Department of Health and Human Services will keep its spokesman, saying it doesn't object to the "occasional treat."
STEVE INSKEEP, host:
Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep.
Children's advocates want the animated character Shrek to get fired. He's being used as a government spokesman against obesity. But he's also involved in selling McDonald's. The coming Shrek movie has promotional ties with Happy Meals, and Snickers, and M&Ms, and Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, Pop-Tarts and Cheez-Its. The Department of Health and Human Services will keep its spokesman, though, saying it doesn't object to the occasional treat.
It's MORNING EDITION.
