Bill Evans' Soulgrass.
Saxophonist Bill Evans has played with John McLaughlin, Les McCann and Miles Davis. Now, he leads a supergroup of virtuoso musicians known as Bill Evans' Soulgrass in a live performance, taped in January 2008 in Charleston, W.V.
With a hybrid style fusing bluegrass and jazz, Evans compiled an exceptional team of well-known players from different backgrounds to get the job done: newgrass icon Sam Bush on mandolin, fiddler Christian Howes, drummer Joel Rosenblatt, Ryan Cavanaugh on banjo and world-renowned bassist Richard Bona. The 2005 CD Soulgrass earned Evans a Grammy nomination and featured Bela Fleck, Bruce Hornsby and John Scofield, among many others. The songs featured here appear on the group's 2007 release, The Other Side of Something — including the speed-grass jaunt "Slippery Bigs," which lets each band perform a solo.
