Callers' founding members, Sara Lucas and Ryan Seaton
The soulful music of Callers is something you might expect to hear in a dimly lit bar. Picture this: Sara Lucas' hauntingly beautiful vocals soaring over the soft, clinking glasses, breaking through the stale air. Guitarist Ryan Seaton's delicate yet confident plucking perfectly accompanies Lucas and rounds out Callers' rich sound.
Fortune, Callers' debut LP, seems to pull from a mix of traditions: While jazzy roots take center stage in "More Than Right," traces of an Irish ballad creep into "Rone" and "O Family." Far from being disjointed, however, Fortune moves effortlessly from start to finish, and is only made more complex and appealing given the diversity of its songs.
Though Lucas and Seaton originally spent time playing and soaking in the scene in New Orleans, Callers now hails from Brooklyn as a trio, where they've acquired a fuller sound thanks to the addition of a few choice brass instruments and percussion. The positive reception of Fortune has already earned Callers a place at SXSW and a slot with Daytrotter sometime in the coming months.
