Music DVDs That Beat Expectations

Music DVDs can often be disappointing reincarnations of television music videos or concert films. But occasionally a title comes along that exceeds expectations. Weekend Edition Sunday music director Ned Wharton suggests these titles:

Oliver Mtukudzi

Shanda DVD Cover

Shanda documents the extraordinary life of Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi, a singer committed to social change through the power of song. The story of "Tuku," as Mtukudzi's fans know him, is told through archival footage, interviews and music recorded in Zimbabwe's townships and beer halls.

Terence Blanchard

Flow DVD Cover

Trumpeter Terence Blanchard's Grammy-nominated DVD is called Flow, a title that refers to what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes as a mental state of supreme engagement and focus. Watching Blanchard connect onstage with his bandmates shows that great jazz is what Flow is all about.
