Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly returns to Mountain Stage in this episode, recorded last March on the campus of Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The Ohio primaries took place the next day — and, as Kelly says, democracy was "blooming in the air."

Kelly has continually diversified his talents over the years, recording pop, rock and country-flavored records. "They Thought I Was Asleep" originally appeared on his bluegrass album Foggy Highway, and he has won awards in his native Australia for his work composing for TV and film. Since re-acquiring the rights to his earlier work, Kelly has recently reissued two volumes of his greatest hits, compiled from 1987 to 2008.

Kelly is joined by the Mountain Stage band for a song from his latest album, Stolen Apples: his re-working of Richard and Robert Sherman's song "You're 16, You're Beautiful and You're Mine," originally cut by Johnny Burnette and later a hit for Ringo Starr.
