National Zoo Welcomes Rare Clouded Leopard Cubs

In the past, the zoo has had trouble mating this leopard species, which is hunted for skins and medicinal uses. In fact, males in captivity have been known to kill the females they are paired with. The secret this time around, the zoo says, is that the parents of the cubs grew up together. ()

Government Moves To Strengthen Florida Levees

June 23, 2009 · Four years ago, the failure of levees in Louisiana from Hurricane Katrina led authorities to re-evaluate the Herbert Hoover Dike that surrounds Lake Okeechobee in Florida. The results were alarming. Now, in a $1 billion project, the Army Corps of Engineers is strengthening levees that 40,000 residents depend on for safety. ()  

 

Ohio's Burning River In Better Health 40 Years Later

June 22, 2009 · Forty years ago, Ohio's Cuyahoga River, which had been compared to "an open septic tank," caught fire. Cuyahoga became a rallying cry for environmentalists and sparked the creation of the EPA and the Clean Water Act. Now the river teems with fish and wildlife. ()  

 

Alaska Hit By 5.4-Magnitude Earthquake

June 22, 2009 · The epicenter was 58 miles from the state's largest city, Anchorage. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury, but the shaking was felt over a wide area. Aftershocks shook the area, with one about a half-hour later measuring 4.0. ()
