September 16, 2007 - (Soundbite of bidding)

LIANE HANSEN, host:

Today is your last chance to bid on one of Howard Brandon's old automobiles. Brandon has been collecting cars for 57 of his 78 years. He says he's had his fun but it's time to give other folks a chance and to give his kids a little money. So a mile south of Murray Kentucky, Howard Brandon is auctioning off about 400 mint-condition vehicles, and they include his favorites.

Mr. HOWARD BRANDON (Car collector): Oh, there'll only be Fords from the 30s and 40s, and they were fast and sporty.

(Soundbite of bidding)

Mr. BRANDON: I'm 78 years old. Time to move on. All of my kids (unintelligible). And I'm gifting to the (unintelligible) pretty much out here.

(Soundbite of bidding)

Mr. BRANDON: Well, I've got a ten(ph) Ford in there. I'm selling it, breaking my heart. And there's '39 Chevrolet with 13,000 miles on it. It really is troubling to sell.

(Soundbite of bidding)

Mr. BRANDON: I kept a '41 Ford and a '44 and a '39 Ford. And I kept the car that my daughter rode home from the hospital in when she's born, which is a '38 Chevrolet. And I kept my '49 Chevrolet truck I bought my son home from the hospital in. So, you know, there's some kept car. And I kept a 1918 Dodge that I restored in the '50s. So I kept seven or eight.

(Soundbite of bidding)

Mr. BRANDON: I love every one of them. It's like getting rid of some of my family.

(Soundbite of bidding)

Mr. BRANDON: Anything that had a wheel, I like. I'm a wheel guy. Anything that got wheels on it, I love it.

(Soundbite of bidding)

HANSEN: Sounds from the Brandon plantation auction gathered for us by Nicole Erwin of member station WKMS in Murray, Kentucky. Howard Brandon is selling off his collection of vintage automobiles along with the occasional antique tractor and airplane. The auction ends today.
