DAVID GREENE, HOST:

It's time for the music project that we call Heavy Rotation. Every month, we ask public radio music hosts to choose their favorite new songs. We compile a list on our website, NPR Music. Here's one of this month's picks:

ART LEVY: I'm Art Levy. I'm a producer and host at KUTX in Austin. We picked Dana Falconberry, a song called "Palmless."

DANA FALCONBERRY: (Singing) Alone within my bed, I spoke but I never said, my breath has come to me...

LEVY: Dana Falconberry is a local singer-songwriter. She's originally from Michigan. And she's kind of known for making acoustic music. It's very beautiful folk music. And then all of the sudden, here's Dana Falconberry kind of going electronic and it kind of caught us all by surprise.

FALCONBERRY: (Singing) (unintelligible) my hands were palmless...

LEVY: She actually teamed up with Jim Eno, who people might know as the drummer for Spoon, another Austin band. They actually ran into each other at a concert here in Austin. Dana Falconberry mentioned that she had this new song. She wasn't sure what to really do with it. Jim Eno said just send it to me. I'd love to take a listen to it. And so he added the drum machine and the synthesizer. And he said he was actually kind of nervous when he sent it back to her 'cause he felt like he completely changed it. But she reportedly loved it.

LEVY: It's very dark. There's actually the synthesizer that almost sounds like a cell phone. Actually, the first time I heard this song, I thought my cell phone was vibrating.

LEVY: There's not kind of this overarching album to hang over it. It just feels like throwing out an idea out there. And from what I understand, the fans have been really loving it and certainly we've been loving it too.

GREENE: That's Art Levy from KUTX in Austin, Texas talking about his pick for Heavy Rotation, "Palmless" by Dana Falconberry. You can find all this month's songs at nprmusic.org.
