'This I Believe' Privacy Policy

Effective April 29, 2005

This privacy policy explains how This I Believe, Inc. (TIB), a Kentucky-based non-profit organization, collects and uses information about visitors to these web pages. We recognize the value of personal privacy and wish to protect your information.

These TIB web pages are maintained and hosted by NPR, and have been developed in collaboration with NPR; TIB may share the information it collects through these web pages with NPR. For information regarding the collection and use of information about visitors by NPR, including NPR's policy with respect to "cookies," please consult NPR's Privacy Policy.

Gathering Information
TIB collects personally identifying information such as your name, e-mail address, address and age on these pages only if you choose to provide that information to us. TIB asks you to provide this information when you submit an essay, ask a comment or question about the series, or request additional information about our activities. TIB also may ask you to provide additional personal information in other limited circumstances specified at the time the information is requested.

Using Information
TIB limits the use of personally-identifying information to the following activities: responding to your e-mails; processing your essay submission for public archives, broadcast by an NPR member station and/or broadcast by NPR, or publication on the project Web site; listing name and location (city, state and/or country) information provided by you when broadcasting or publishing user e-mails or other submissions; editorial purposes such as contacting users for an online survey; sending communications, including marketing and promotional communications, from TIB to users who have 'opted in' to the receipt of such communications; other internal TIB purposes; and other purposes specified at the time the information is gathered.

Personally-identifying information collected by TIB is shared only with NPR NPR member stations, Atlantic Public Media (a co-producer of the series with TIB), and with other third parties only when the user specifically consents to such distribution.

TIB also may disclose personal information if required to do so by law or if we believe that such action is necessary to (a) comply with the law or with legal process, (b) protect against misuse or unauthorized use of the NPR web site, or (c) protect the personal safety or property of NPR web site users, the public or TIB and NPR and its employees. If you do not want your personally-identifying information to be collected or used for any of these purposes, you can simply 'opt out' according to the process described below.

Children
Visitors under the age of 18 must have the approval of a parent or legal guardian to submit an essay or other personal information to TIB. Approval of a parent or guardian will be verified before any broadcast or other distribution of the essay.

Links to other Sites
The TIB web pages contain links to other sites that may not follow the same privacy policies as TIB or NPR. These sites may use cookies, collect data, and use the data in ways that we would not. TIB and NPR are not responsible for the privacy practices or any information or materials on these other sites.
Acceptance of Privacy Policy Terms
TIB reserves the right to change this policy. Any changes to this policy will be posted to this page as soon as reasonably possible, so please check this page periodically. Use of these pages constitutes consent to any policy then in effect.
