— NPR's Elizabeth Blair has an appreciation of composer Roy Harris, whose 3rd Symphony has been called "the great American symphony". Trombonist Jim Pugh has been reconstructing a classical piece Harris wrote for Tommy Dorsey in 1938. The piece paradoxically, titled "American Symphony", was never performed. Conductor Marin Alsop says the piece combines sophisticated classical and big band sounds along with the avante garde ideals of the 1930's.
