Alan Cheuse reviews While I Was Gone by Sue Miller. Thirty years ago Jo Becker ran out on her marriage, assumed a new identity, moved into a group house, and lived a bohemian, romantic life until her best friend was violently murdered. Now, many years later, she is a successful animal doctor, married with three grown children. But when an old housemate comes to live in her small town, things start to unravel.
