NPR's Art Silverman, the coordinating producer of Lost and Found Sound, was born shortly after Mullin, Crosby and AMPEX put the tape recorder on the market. He grew up with machines always around at home. He made his first leap into broadcasting 36 years ago this July 4th, when he covered the holiday festivities in his hometown of Livingston, New Jersey (five miles from the Edison labs where the phonograph was perfected). His first mobile tape recorder changed his life and launched into a career in radio. We hear what it sounded like, with all its imperfections.
