NPR's Richard Harris has the third and final installment in our series on the race to decode human DNA. Within the next year or so, there will be huge amounts of information about the fundamental structure of human genes. But translating this huge database into practical uses may not happen as quickly as some predict. It could be a decade or more before people begin seeing the payoff from the project — new tests and treatments for human disease.
